My reflection about the class

     I have learned a lot from the class. Mostly about Google translation. To be honest, I thought GT is very unreliable before this class, so I didn’t really trust it. However, through this class, I learn that GT can actually be very helpful for our daily life.

    Here are the steps how I complete my work with GT. Firstly, I would cut the text into different small parts and just paste the whole part directly on GT to translate. Because I realize that GT, is actually very smart, it would translate a sentence based according to the whole context. Therefore I believe it is important to give enough information to GT and it can help us translate more precisely. After translating the whole text with GT, I would check the result on my own. When I find somewhere weird, I cut it into smaller sentence and translate it with GT again in case it misunderstand the meaning. It will be almost perfect at this step usually. When this step doesn’t work, try to collect the information on the net and translate on my own.

    There is a point that I think is inconvenient when I use GT in the work of subtitle translation and Bantaoyao transcript translation. What they have in common is that I have to read out the transcript. However, I think GT always tries to translate the text formally. I do not mean it is a bad thing. That would be helpful on some occasions. But, when I have to speak with the content translated by GT in the real world, it would be a little bit awkward. In my opinion, I think Google can try to set it into two modes, one is for formal occasions, and the other is for daily conversation. I will be very happy if they can do this and I really hope they can improve on this point.

    Although there are some minor drawbacks, overall, I think GT is good. It is really helpful for me and it makes my life more convenient. I will often use GT to help me work in the future. I feel that I am so lucky to take this class, and I learn lots of things from the class. Thanks to Professor Sherry’s teaching and all the thing I have learned from the class. I will let others know about this good class and recommend them to take this class.
